Staying Healthy While Traveling

Today I direct your attention to an article on CNN.com

Click here to review the article

Most of the tips have to do with keeping your hands clean. If you're not compulsively washing your hands while traveling you're just asking for trouble. The author also has some interesting tips like a suggestion to sit in the front of the airplane.

Heading West

We are currently a few miles east of Shreveport, Louisiana. Finally the Internet is more reliable and faster. It has been raining all day long so it has been very hard on Philip. The Duchess currently shows us arriving at home shortly before 7pm. We may stop on the way in East Texas and visit my dad for a short while though.

Sounds like Black Friday is going well. If you woke up early to go to a mall, more power to you!

We Are Thankful For.....

Leah: Peanut butter sandwiches, that my dad loves Disney as much as I do, that Jesus loves me, my pappy and momma, that my brothers are funny and my sister's meatloaf.

Briana: My job, my foster puppies and Chris.

Terrah:My job, my co workers, my puppy is finally trained, my boys, that my husband is a good cleaner, my daddy, my grandma's health, my brother, that gas prices have gone down and my BFF Whitney.

Marty: The wonderful year we've had at Legacy Travel, our new employees since this time last year (Leah and Briana) and my health.

Lindsey: I am thankful for my dad, and my grandmother, being okay. I'm thankful for my home and how happy it makes me. my cats, my family and my job.

And finally...me....

I'm thankful that my kids are basically healthy, that God has provided for us to be able to send them to such a great school where they are valued and cherished. I'm thankful that God saw fit to arrange a way back to himself for me. I'm thankful that Philip and I get to be self employed. I'm thankful that our business is up for the year. I'm thankful to be able to travel so often and freely but most of all I'm thankful that every time I get to COME HOME and be with my fantastic family.

The Economy and Your Vacation

Vacationing in Today's Economy

Gloomy Economy Takes Toll on Thanksgiving Travel

Economy Hinders Holiday Travel Plans

Gloom and doom stories about the economy are everywhere. Many of these stories deal with how the economy is affecting travel. My experience has been that reporters tend to have a preconceived idea about a situation and they look for situations or statistics that support the position they want to take in the article. Many times, they're looking for a different way to frame the same story over and over. Just watch CNN for more than 15 minutes and you'll get a taste. Since the travel industry seems to be the red headed stepchild of the media, talking about a decrease in travel is a very popular topic at the moment.

But let's break down the real story. In the L.A. times story linked above the "toll" that has been taken on Thanksgiving Travel is 2%. That's right TWO PERCENT! From the headline I would have guessed it to be much higher, wouldn't you?

The fact of the matter is that here at Legacy Travel we've had our second straight record year. In fact, by July of this year, more people were going on vacation than in all of 2007. We have more vacations booked for the coming year than we had in place at this time last year. The fact is that during times of high stress vacations are more important than ever.

People will take wonderful vacations this year. People will have special anniversary trips, destination weddings, memorable family vacations, honeymoons and amazing adventures. The stock market will come and go, but the only time we have is now. Celebrate your family and your life.

The other facet of travel and this economy that you're likely to hear about in the press right now is all of the amazing deals you'll find since the economy is suffering. It is true that some hotels and resorts are cutting prices. The rest of the story that you're not likely to read about is that even though hotels and resorts cut prices, the airlines reduced the number of flights they operate so the cost for airfare has actually increased.

Remember back when gas was costing almost $4.00 per gallon? The airlines reduced the number of flights they operate so that the remainder of the flights would be full and could be operated at a profit.

So, the bottom line is:

1) You do need a vacation and will in all likelihood take one this year.
2) Because of the reduction in the number of airline seats, the best bet to get a great deal is to book early.
3) Don't worry, be happy.

Random Thoughts From My Trip

1. If you rely on your laptop heavily at home, there are many advantages to taking it along with you to Europe. Many hotels offer high speed internet in the room. Consider what this allows:

-You can keep up with your emails. (I would definitely recommend establishing an email folder called something like "When I return" or "After Vacation" where you put all of your actionable emails so they don't sit in your inbox.) This means that each day when you are out touring you'll know that the world isn't falling apart around you. Also, when you get home you won't have a million emails to go through and follow up on.

-Skype. On my most recent trip I charged up my Skype account with $10.00 and signed up for Skype Out. This allowed me to make outgoing telephone calls. My traveling companion and I both called home liberally and spoke at length. I just checked it and I still have a balance of over $4.00. So, for a week of virtually unlimited international calls I paid less than $6.00.

-Google Map Directions. When we arrived in Paris we wanted to find a grocery store so that we could get something to eat without having to sit down at a restaurant. Through Google Maps I was able to search for grocery stores in the area and look at photographs of what the path between our hotel and the grocery store looked like.

-Other Resources. We had access to the vast knowledge of the Internet as we looked for restaurants and attractions.

-iTunes: The coolest thing about having iTunes with me is that we were able to rent movies via iTunes for only $3.99 as opposed to the pay per view movies at the hotel for 25 Euros per movie. Also, with the iTunes movie we got to watch the end of it while we were on the Chunnel. Plus when we couldn't find anything on TV late at night I could watch downloaded episodes of my favorite programs from home.

2. Amazon Kindle: Amazon's wonderful electronic reading device is a fabulous resource to have on a trip. When you finish one book, just download another one! Rather than scouring the English language bookstores you have access to any book you want. Since the Amazon wireless system doesn't work outside the USA, you do need to have your laptop with you to download the books to your Kindle.

3. Adapters: I learned on this trip that if the brick on your power cord indicates that it can take 240v input, you can plug it into the outlet with just an adapter rather than worrying about a converter. My cell phone charger, Macbook charger and Kindle charger all did not need a converter which was fabulous.

4. If you stay in an expensive hotel, then everything around it is likely to be expensive as well. I won this trip so I was in much more expensive hotels than normal. Particularly in Paris I noticed that the shops and restaurants were much more expensive than in other parts of town. In our neighborhood we found a restaurant where a cheeseburger could be had for 27 Euros. Closer to the Eiffel Tower the prices were much more reasonable.

5. If there is a Segway tour where you're going, take it.

6. Trash Cans: We noticed that in many parts of London it was virtually impossible to find a trash can. This left us carrying our trash with us as we walked around. In Paris there were trash cans everywhere. Remarkably, there was also much more trash everywhere.

7. Friendly makes up for alot.

I'm catching a cold

Yesterday morning I felt that tell tale tightness in my chest. I was achy all day and then this morning my throat feels like I'm swallowing broken glass. I'm drinking copious amounts of Airborne, taking cold medicine and I'm trying to take my vitamins but the thought of swallowing those big pills right now is a little intimidating.

I'm supposed to be heading down to Mexico on Thursday and I'd really like not to be sick.

Airplanes

If there were actual walls around the personal space that belongs to each passenger in economy class on a flight, it would be considered cruel to actually expect a person to stay there. On my recent flight from Paris to Chicago the audio jack didn't work at my assigned seat. The flight attendant moved me to another aisle seat, much to the chagrin of the older gentleman who occupied the adjacent window seat. He was slanted across both seats when I arrived and never fully moved himself to occupy just his seat. I spent most of the nine hour flight with his leg pressed up against mine.

At one point in the flight I felt something on my arm. When I looked, I discovered that the gentleman behind me had removed his shoe and was using the armrest between the older gentleman and I to rest his foot. His sock clad toe was resting on my arm. Where else is that socially acceptable? Why is that okay on an airplane?

Why don't the economics of providing a somewhat comfortable space in which to travel work out so that it is actually possible to afford? It can't ALL be blamed on fuel costs.

Someday when I run an airline......

Finally...Day 6 Video

Homeward Bound!

I am sitting at my gate at CDG airport here in Paris. I am SO ready to be home. I can't wait to see my family. I tried to upload our day 6 video for hours and hours yesterday. The upload speed at the Westin was worse than awful. Here at the airport WiFi the upload speed is much much better and I expect to have it posted before boarding.

Big hit on this trip: Amazon Kindle

How terrific to be able to instantly download another book without adding to my luggage.

It is about 5am in Texas right now. I have already reset my watch. I'm living on Texas time now.

Here is the link to the video in case the embed code isn't ready before I have to board:

A Historic Day

Election 2008 is in the history books. Barack Obama will be our new president. Although I did not vote for him, I am delighted to see the excitement around the world at what has happened in the USA. The momentum alone will propel our economy and our standing in the world.

Congratulations!

Watching the Polls

Today is eerily quiet here at the office. We had lunch together as a group and distributed our BHAG gifts. We gave our entire staff Amazon Kindles in recognition for having a great month last month in October.

Whenever something big is happening it tends to distract people from the important work of planning vacations. I think that later this week or next week we'll see a rush of people booking trips. The same thing happened one time when the Dallas Mavericks made it farther in the NBA Finals than usual. People here in Dallas were completely distracted and it was dead here.

As soon as the Mavs lost, it picked right back up and made up for lost time. I think this time will be even more distinct because I think people are going to be feeling more stable and hopeful in general when the election is over.

Getting Ready for a Trip

When preparing for a long overseas trip (in my life, seven nights is a long time) I try to be completely ready to go a full day before my actual departure date.

This means that I am preparing as though I am leaving tomorrow.

I have a stack of stuff in my bedroom ready to put together in my suitcase. I have finished all of my customer activities through the date I'll be back at the office (November 17). I have lists of last minute things to attend to. Tomorrow should be pretty boring.

Halloween Night

On Friday my Daughter went home with a friend where a whole group of her friends would trick or treat. The neighborhood is reputed to be quite generous with the candy.

Apparently when they were about to visit the last house and had decided to head home, a young man probably 18-20 years old smelling heavily of alcohol came up behind her and grabbed her with both arms.

What he had apparently not anticipated was that my daughter is a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Her reflex reaction resulted in a bloody face for him and his immediate retreat.

Me at 6 or 7

I remember wanting these red, white and blue Keds. I even remember the jingle from the commercial that advertised them. I was so happy when Momma got them for me.

See how fast they made me run?
